All the stuff that's in my Favorites... and more.

Overview: On-line contests, puzzles, on-line comics, joke sites, encyclopedia, e-cards, recipes, pen-pal sites, miscellaneous, free email and email aliases

On-line contests

Klik og Vind - Danish citizens only. New contest every hour, day, week and month. Prizes in a range from CD's over lava lamps to holidays and cars. The contest is more a market research than a real quiz. You tell about yourself, you have the chance to win something (it works... I won a CD).

Puzzles

Binary Arts - a puzzle company with an interactive website. If you - like I - are a great fan of "Rush Hour", notice that every week three new Rush Hour "questions" are released... play them on-line (requires Java). Fun!

Thinks.com is an on-line site for people into games that requires brains. No violence here, but lots of the games require brain cell activity. In particular, check out their Java games section. My favourite is the Rock game. I had such one in plastic when I was a kid...

Labyrinthia is a place in Denmark which you ought to visit, if you're into mazes and labyrinths. Outside, there's a giant maze with 1 km of walkways - you can get a certificate if you complete it (takes 20-40 minutes); inside, there's a "Kryptotek", where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or a cold Coke while playing with the many brain- and board games placed around in the room. If you fight too long with one of them and the rest of the family drags you away, because they want to go on, but you won't give up, you can buy the games at reasonable prices. Most of them are high-quality wooden games. Check out their site for opening hours, which varies a lot. Entrance fee is 30 dKr (1999) and covers unlimited use (that day) of the maze and Kryptotek. Games are of various levels of difficulty, so bring both your parents and your kids. Site in Danish, English, German and Dutch.

On-line comics

Dilbert - I check 4 on-line comics regularly. Dilbert needs no introduction, right? I think Alice is my role model.

General Protection Fault - is a bit like User Friendly and then not... it has more about the persons themselves, including Fred the Slimemold...

User Friendly - is another classic. Join Dust Puppy and Erwin along with Stef, Miranda and the others at Columbia Internet.

Not In My Backyard - is the un-nerdiest comic on this list. But if you like a cute little comic with funny puns and nice "inhabitants" - mainly dogs - give it a try. My favourites are definitely Bip and Bap, the Yorkshire Terriers. You can join the mailing list and get today's strip in your inbox daily.

Joke sites

Top Five - Various lists like Top 16 Signs You Chose the Wrong Pet or whatever. Usually very funny. Join the mailing list to get them daily.

Joke a Day - Wellknown jokesite. Personally, I think the Twisted Tunes is the best part...

Encyclopedia

Encarta Online - requires membership for full use, but the free stuff is OK.

Encyclopedia.com - another on-line encyclopedia.

Whatis.com - an on-line guide to words from the computer world.

E-cards

Corbis - Mr. Gates used a fraction of his fortune and bought the rights for about one million of pretty pictures... they're here to send as e-cards. Just pretty cards, but if you're looking for funny cards, I recommend Care-Mail (see below). Also screen savers and other stuff, some free, some not.

Care-Mail - is huge and funny. So if you're tried of BlueMountain, go here...

Recipes

I enjoy cooking, and here are some recipes, which can be found on this site. They're all in Danish (yet), but check them out, if you understand Danish!.

Pen-pal sites

Ed's Mail-Friends Page - it's huge, it's well done. More than 12,000 entries.

Pacific Mall - another great site, though the pages tend to be a bit long - some rearrangement would be good.

Miscellaneous

How Stuff Works - by Marshall Brain (it is his name). A very interesting site with excellent explanations of everything from cell phones to boogers (if you really want to know what they consist of, this site has the answer).

Garden Web - an on-line forum for everybody with an interest in botany. I lurk around in the Cacti & Succulents Forum.

Volcano World - I'm crazy about volcanoes, and this is the site for finding info. I also enjoyed the Volcano movie a lot :-)

The Food Guide - My fiancée and I enjoy dining out, and having tried quite a lot of restaurants, we decided to make a database of our opinions about these places... So if you're going to Ballerup, Birkerød, Brussels, Celle, Ebeltoft, Frederiksberg, København (Copenhagen), London, Lyngby, Mariager, Rødby or Århus, you can read about restaurants we've tried there, and which we can recommend and which you should avoid. Danish version here.

Terra Server - see your home from a satellite. Scary stuff... but cool. Mainly USA, but also a few places in Europe (I've seen my house from above! Whoa!)

Rejseplanen - in Danish only. Enter your starting address, your target address, time for arrival and it finds the optimal route (DSB/HT) for you to get there. Denmark only.

Netdoktor - in Danish only. Check this site out, if you want to read more about all the diseases, you risc to get...

Free e-mail and email aliases

Hotmail - I usually just telnet to the mailserver, when I have to get in touch with my mail, and I'm not at home. But every now and then (such as when a crappy connection make a plain telnet a living hell) when I have to send a mail, I have a couple of webbased email accounts for that purpose. Hotmail hosts one of them, and I think they've improved a lot recently (I do not think of security here :-) ).

Mailcity - is another site I use infrequently. It's not my favourite, but it works. Unfortunately, I get spammed to this account, though I haven't given my address away... one can just wonder.

Bigfoot - provides me with a couple of aliases, originating from a time when I didn't have my own domain and couldn't decide my own email address.
