Who's the NerdBird?
Haven't you been wondering who's that person behind it all?
Well, my name in real life is Lærke Thomasen, a female nerd of 32 years. I'm
working as a Systems Developer at COWI
- an engineering company - working entirely with Microsoft products, mainly
Outlook/Exchange and other Office programs as well as VB.net for more general purposes.
I have an ambition of becoming MCSD someday (I know
I've said this for a long time, though...).
In November 1999 I graduated from Ballerup Handelsskole as "datamatiker" ("Computer Science
Light"). I started working with COBOL and AS/400, but I soon
realised that no matter how much I try out other operating systems, I
always return to my favourite, Windows, and I left COBOL behind me on March 1st,
2000.
If you're a nerd or a geek, this should give you information about me (if
you're not a nerd or a geek, but still curious, follow the hyperlink to decode it; or use
this automatic decoder (finally,
you can get my geek code decoded directly by going here):

Family: I'm engaged to my own personal Unix-guy Jens Fallesen (since December 1997) - a
true example of peaceful coexistence between a Unix freak and a Microsoft fanatic. In April 2006, a house rabbit called Dante moved in and took over the house - fortunately he's so social, he wants us to stay here with him... Until Valentines Day 2000, our family included Nuser,
a fluffy little creature, which, according to her papers, was a 10½ year old Yorkshire
terrier. No kids and no plans to get any. No sisters or brothers.
Likes: Playing with Microsoft Office (yep! It is
funny! At least if you're me!), Visual Basic (various flavours), doing graphics for
this site and doing web graphics in
general, constructing (and solving) logical riddles,
corresponding with my friends abroad, volcanoes, exotic dishes, listening to
music, travelling, movies... I also love animals; I have "adopted" a snowy
owl in Skånes Djurpark in Sweden and when I was younger, I had a few rabbits.
Dislikes: Carrots, celery, lactose, fanatics
(religious, OS, food etc), chart music, FORTRAN, over crowded busses, being bored, being somewhere without a PC, getting
spam, Friday evening in the
city (too crowded!)...
Associations (or whatever to call them) I'm actually a member of:
Ungdommens Naturvidenskabelige Forening
(I was in the board there several years ago, and was the editor of our newsletter, UNFinished
(RIP!). Nowadays I just try to monopolize the suggestion box for next years
events), Dansk Meteorologisk Selskab
(though I quit from Meteorology, I still find it interesting!), Dyrenes
Beskyttelse (Danish Society for the Protection of Animals), UNICEF
(as a socalled "partner", meaning I pay them a fixed amount every
month), Dansk
Dendrologisk Forening (Danish Dendrological (=science of trees) Society - I
have no professional background concerning trees - I just find them utterly
fascinating) and a few others.
Other projects: I'm also a notary for Thawte
(if you have to ask what it is, it is not relevant for you). I occasionally write about puzzles and stuff at GeekCulture
(in Danish).
Curriculum Vitae
Studies
- 1989: Left Dyrholmskolen in Herlev after 9th grade

- 1991-1992: Gladsaxe Gymnasium, 3rd grade (mathematical). I graduated with a result of
10,9
- 1992-1997: Student of geophysics/physics at the Niels Bohr Institute of Astronomy,
Physics and Geophysics at the University of Copenhagen. I passed a bunch of courses (Matematik
A, Matematik Aex, Matematik F, Matematik 3 Numerisk Analyse, Datalogi F, Computerfysik,
Fysik 1, Fysik 2 Elektronikkursus, Fysik 2 Dataopsamling og processtyring, Fysik 3

Systems (result: 11), Mainframes (result: 11), IT-strategy & Business Economy (result:
6), Networks (part 2) (result: 10), Operating Systems Theory & C++ (result: 5 - but
that was actually one of the good results in the class :-( ), Software Engineering &
Database Development (result: 11) and Computer- and Network Architecture (result: 9), and
finally my thesis on Agents & Assistants (result: 10) making up to an average of
9,2 (with the thesis counting twice).
Work
- 1993: I worked a couple of months that summer at Daells Varehus counting t-shirts, forks
and spoons, bags, tents and everything to earn money. Not a very inspiring job, but people
were funny there.
- 1997: I've also tried being an interviewer for AIM ACNielsen. It wasn't quite my style.
Too many people, too few computers.
- 1997: I worked about a week fiddling with a database (merging a couple of them in Excel)
at DAKO medicals - a company I really
liked, because they had great (and cheap) food for lunch! And the people
were so nice, too.
- 1997: I also did some telephone interviews for Dansk Catering Center, talking to
elderly people about the food they get.
- 1997: 4 months at Clorius / Raab-Karcher
Energy Services in Ballerup, feeding their database and running around telling the
others how to use Office (the last part is definitely the funniest)
- 1998: HelpDesk support at InWear a couple of months
- 1998: At Clorius again
- 1999-2000: Systems Developer at Center for
Program Udvikling, Høje Taastrup (COBOL, AS/400)
- 2000-: Systems Developer at COWI,
Lyngby (OOA&D, VB[A|S]-development, Outlook/Exchange, FrontPage,
Internet Explorer, Windows NT->XP)
Certification and stuff
- 2000: "VBS in MS Outlook" 2-day course at Hans Tørsleff
Management Services
- 2000-2001: I'm certified with BrainBench
in about 70 (11 masters) subjects... so there are too many to list all
the nice logos here - if you're curious, check it out here
instead.
- 2001: I'm SkillDrill certified in
Cascading Style Sheets 1, Foundation series: HTML 4.0, HTML Development, Microsoft Outlook 2000 Programming, Microsoft
Visual Basic 6.0 Programming, Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Development, Microsoft Windows 98 Installation
and Configuration, PC Components and Subsystems, PC Hardware and Software
Configuration, Microsoft Word 2000, and Project Management.
- 2001: Microsoft Certified Professional - Designing and Implementing
Websites with FrontPage 98 (860/1000 points, whew!).
- Winter 2003-2004: Course in rhetorics at Roskilde Folkeuniversitet
- Spring 2004: VB.net course at Teknologisk Institut
- 2004: Microsoft Office Specialist, Outlook XP (975/1000 points; one question wrong, dammit :-) )
